Senator Roy Blunt Visits KCU For Opioid Roundtable

United States Senator Roy Blunt visited KCU on July 19, meeting with faculty and medical students on the topic of education and treatment in combating the opioid epidemic. KCU is one of 60 U.S. medical schools that has pledged to enhance education for students, who eventually will be prescribing opioids as doctors.

The University already meets the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for teaching pain and addiction management. Beginning in August, KCU will enhance classroom instruction by adding training in the first and second years of medical school to include medical simulation and treating of patients with particularly challenging cases.

During the roundtable, Senator Blunt shared his commitment to stemming the growing problem in Missouri and beyond, referencing the recent Senate passage of a bipartisan bill, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), which would increase funding for treatment, prevention and mental health services.
